F’nAround Review: Hogapalooza Brings Arkansas Heat to Windy City Smokeout and Earns a 10/10 From Chicago’s Finest
Two Chicago police officers, two forks and one very spicy bite. What could possibly go wrong?
At Windy City Smokeout, the F’nAround team came prepared to sample some of the best barbecue from across the country. But when Mike stopped at Hogapalooza Bar-B-Que, the review quickly became much more memorable than an ordinary food tasting.
Hogapalooza served up a smoky, flavorful bite with enough heat to make everyone pay attention. Mike could have reviewed it alone, but where is the fun in that?
Two Chicago police officers happened to be nearby, so Mike invited them to review their plate and help deliver an impartial verdict. Both officers tried it, took in the smoke, seasoning and spice, and reached the conclusion:
10 out of 10.
That is about as unanimous as a barbecue review gets.
Two Cops, One Plate
There we were: two Chicago police officers, one plate and Mike wearing a LoyalFans T-shirt while his questionable internet nostalgia began kicking in.
Naturally, Mike decided to shoot his shot.
Thankfully, this version involved award-winning barbecue, everyone willingly participated, and the only thing getting destroyed was the meat.
All the tasters dug into the same spicy offering, and despite the heat, nobody reached for their Miranda rights. Instead, the officers joined Mike in praising the flavor and gave Hogapalooza a perfect score.
It was an unscripted festival moment that captured what makes Windy City Smokeout so enjoyable. People who might never otherwise meet can suddenly find themselves standing together, sharing food and debating whether a bite is pleasantly spicy or attempting to file assault charges against their taste buds.
In this case, the spice brought the heat without overpowering the barbecue.
More Than Just Heat
Spicy food sometimes relies on pain to create an experience. Hogapalooza’s offering did not forget that barbecue still needs to taste good.
Officer number one approved.
Officer number two approved.
Two Chicagoans, one shared plate and a unanimous verdict: Hogapalooza delivered.
From Friends to the Competition Circuit
Hogapalooza Bar-B-Que traces its history to 1998, when a group of lifelong friends decided to test their skills on the barbecue competition circuit. What began as friends cooking together grew into an award-winning barbecue and catering operation based in Wynne, Arkansas.
Over the years, Hogapalooza has served its barbecue at events across the country, traveling to cities including Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, Kansas City, Dallas, New York City and beyond.
Its menu is built around authentic pit barbecue, including whole hog, St. Louis-style ribs, baby back ribs, pulled pork and brisket. Its broader offerings also include barbecue nachos, twice-baked potato casserole and banana pudding.
That background matters at a festival like Windy City Smokeout. Hogapalooza was not simply serving food from a temporary booth it was bringing decades of competition experience and large-event cooking to Chicago.
Barbecue Made for a Festival
Serving barbecue at a major festival presents a different challenge from serving it inside a restaurant. Large crowds must be fed quickly, but the meat still needs to preserve the smoke, moisture and flavor that made people stand in line for it.
Hogapalooza handled that balance well.
Even better, the moment did not feel staged. Mike saw an opportunity to bring two festivalgoers into the review, who just happened to be Chicago police officers and they were willing to F’nAround with us.
Their reactions said the rest.
The F’nAround Verdict
Hogapalooza brought Arkansas barbecue, serious smoke and a welcome dose of heat to Windy City Smokeout.
The meat was flavorful, the spice was memorable and the experience became even better when two Chicago police officers agreed to share the plate. Both officers awarded it a 10 out of 10, creating one of our favorite spontaneous reviews from the festival.
Our verdict: Hogapalooza is worth seeking out whenever its traveling barbecue operation comes through Chicago.
Come for the smoked meat. Stay for the spice. And remember: if Mike approaches while wearing a LoyalFans shirt and asks whether you want to share one plate, there is probably a joke coming.
Probably.
