F’nAround Reviews: Gyumon Japanese BBQ The Only Time Cooking Your Own Dinner Actually Feels Like a Vacation

There’s something oddly satisfying about paying someone else…

…so you can cook your own food.

And honestly?

We’re completely okay with it.

We recently stopped by Gyumon Japanese BBQ in Downtown Oak Park at 105 N. Marion Street, and after spending an evening grilling premium meats, eating sushi, drinking way too much boba, and ending the night making s’mores over our own tabletop grill, we totally understand why Japanese BBQ has become so popular.

Japanese BBQ Done Right

If you’ve never experienced Japanese Yakiniku, here’s the idea.

Every table has its own built grill. Instead of ordering a fully prepared entrée, you order premium meats, seafood, sushi, appetizers, vegetables, and sides that arrive raw and ready for you to cook exactly how you like them.

It turns dinner into an experience instead of just a meal.

Whether you want your Wagyu medium rare or your steak cooked a little longer, you’re in control.

Diamond AYCE Was Worth Every Penny

Gyumon offers multiple All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) tiers ranging from Silver to Diamond.

We went with the Diamond Menu, and if you’re going to visit, this is the one we’d recommend.

The premium selections make all the difference.

The A5-style Wagyu, premium beef selections, sushi, and especially the carpaccio dishes easily justified upgrading to the top tier.

Every round felt like ordering from a completely different restaurant.

Fastest AYCE Service We’ve Experienced

One thing that immediately stood out…

They move.

Really move.

If you’ve eaten at other AYCE restaurants, you’re probably used to ordering a round, waiting ten or fifteen minutes, eating, then ordering again.

Not here.

Nearly every order arrived in about five minutes or less.

Everything is ordered digitally, making the entire process incredibly efficient.

By the time we’d finished cooking one round…

…the next one was already showing up.

If you’re hungry, be ready.

The kitchen clearly came prepared.

Brown Sugar Uni Uni Boba Is Dangerous

We made one mistake.

Ordering the Brown Sugar Uni Uni Boba.

Not because it wasn’t good.

Because it was.

Really good.

Good enough that we kept ordering more throughout dinner.

Creamy, rich, sweet without being overpowering, and honestly one of the better brown sugar boba drinks we’ve had.

The Birthday Surprise

Now for the embarrassing part.

Somehow the staff overheard us mentioning it was my birthday.

Next thing I know…

The entire team surrounded the table.

They put a birthday headband on my head.

Brought out a slice of mango cake with a candle.

Lit it.

Started singing.

And carried an enormous illuminated Happy Birthday sign across the restaurant.

Was it embarrassing?

Absolutely.

Was it one of the nicest customer service moments we’ve had in a long time?

Also absolutely.

Nobody had to do that.

But they did without being asked.

Those little moments are what people remember long after the meal is over.

The Grill Couldn’t Be Easier

If you’ve never cooked on a tabletop grill before, don’t worry.

It’s incredibly easy.

The staff explains everything, changes or cleans the grill when needed, and keeps everything moving so you can simply enjoy cooking.

It’s interactive without ever feeling complicated.

And Then…

S’mores.

This may honestly be my favorite tradition in Japanese BBQ.

After you’ve spent the evening grilling premium meats, eating sushi, and probably making questionable decisions with “one more order,” you finish by roasting marshmallows and making your own s’mores.

Does it make logical sense?

Not really.

Does it feel completely right?

Absolutely.

It’s like grabbing the $1.50 Costco hot dog after spending $500 inside the warehouse.

You don’t need it.

You’ve already eaten.

But somehow your brain says…

“Yeah… this is the perfect ending.”

And somehow…

Your brain is right.

F’nAround Verdict

Gyumon combines excellent food with an experience that’s genuinely fun.

The premium meats are excellent.

The sushi surprised us.

Service was among the fastest we’ve experienced at an AYCE restaurant.

The birthday celebration was above and beyond.

And ending the meal making s’mores around your own grill is one of those little details that turns dinner into something memorable.

Being located in Oak Park also makes it noticeably more affordable than many comparable Japanese BBQ experiences in downtown Chicago, while still delivering premium quality.

We’ll absolutely be back.

F’nAround Score

Would We Go Back? Without even thinking twice.

Gyumon Japanese BBQ

105 N. Marion Street

Downtown Oak Park, IL 60301

If you’re looking for one of the best Japanese BBQ experiences in the Chicago area, Gyumon deserves to be on your list. Come hungry… because unlike most AYCE restaurants, the kitchen isn’t going to give you much time to recover between rounds.

I’d definitely have to call out these F’nAround favorites:

  • Wagyu Ribeye

  • Wagyu Short Rib

  • Wagyu Filet Mignon

  • Salmon Carpaccio

  • Yellowtail Carpaccio

  • Yellowtail Jalapeño Hand Roll

  • Wagyu Sizzling Stone Pot Rice

  • Brown Sugar Uni Uni Boba (from the drink menu)

  • Marshmallows for making s’mores at the end

Those were the items that really make the Diamond tier feel like an upgrade over a standard AYCE Japanese BBQ experience.
