How to Pick Up a Latina, Part 1: Mike Asks the Chicago El Grito Community for Advice

Looking for the perfect pickup line? Mike took his question straight to the El Grito crowd and learned that a little confidence, a good sense of humor and community advice might be a better start than a rehearsed line.

At El Grito, Mike had a question for the community: What’s the best line, phrase, tip or trick for a gringo guy like him who wants to meet a Latina and maybe get her phone number?

It was part sincere curiosity, part classic Mike. He wanted to hear what people would actually recommend and, naturally, to see what kind of answers he could get when he put the question out there in the middle of a celebration of Latino culture.

The responses turned the moment into a funny little how-to guide. Maybe there’s a perfect opening line. Maybe there isn’t. Either way, Mike was ready to listen, take notes and try not to make a mess of the assignment.

Is there really a perfect pickup line?

Mike’s question sounds simple: What should a guy say? But meeting someone isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation, and there’s no magic phrase that works for everyone. A good conversation starts with treating the person in front of you like a person not like a challenge with a secret answer.

That still leaves plenty of room for a little humor. The best advice for Mike might be to relax, be himself, show genuine interest and know when to keep the conversation going or when to give someone space. And if the community has a better opening line than anything he can come up with on his own, he’s listening.

Mike’s El Grito community guide

This is Part 1 of Mike’s informal guide to meeting someone, as told by the people he asked at El Grito. The goal wasn’t to pretend there’s one perfect way to approach a Latina. It was to hear the community’s ideas, share a laugh and celebrate the conversations that happen when people get together.

Mike’s appreciation for Latino culture tends to come through in his own way: curious, enthusiastic and always willing to ask a question that might get the whole crowd talking. This time, he put the question to the people who could give him the best advice or at least make sure he didn’t walk away with the worst advice.

So what should Mike try? A clever line? A genuine compliment? A simple “Hi”? We’ll let the community decide.

What’s your best advice for Mike? Share a respectful tip, a funny line or a cautionary tale in the comments. Help him out before Part 2.
