Sideshow Gallery Review: We Accidentally Walked Into a Renaissance Faire, a Witch Market, and Someone’s Side Quest
Sideshow Gallery Review: We Accidentally Walked Into a Renaissance Faire, a Witch Market, and Someone’s Side Quest
Sometimes we go somewhere knowing exactly what we’re getting into.
This was not one of those times.
We were walking through Logan Square when we spotted a storefront decorated with mysterious symbols, banners hanging from iron gates, an owl staring through a window, tarot signs, dragon potions, and enough occult energy to make a level-one Dungeons & Dragons character immediately spend all their gold.
Naturally, we walked inside.
At first glance, Sideshow Gallery looks like the kind of place where you accidentally purchase a cursed artifact and spend the next three movies trying to return it to a crypt in Scotland.
The storefront alone should have warned us.
One side of the building featured banners reading:
Wisdom. Justice. Community. Rebirth.
The other side had revolution tattoo shop which is probably run by someone who definitely knows at least three ravens by name.
Then we noticed there was an event happening.
Not just any event.
The Medieval Midsommar Faire.
Which is apparently what happens when a renaissance festival, an art gallery, a witch market, a fantasy novel, and a Tim Burton fever dream all agree to share rent.
The deeper we went, the more confusing and entertaining it became.
One booth offered psychic readings under a sign that literally asked:
“Ready to get your mind blown?”
Another featured a bottle labeled Dragon’s Breath that looked suspiciously like the potion every RPG vendor sells right before you fight a boss.
At this point I was no longer sure whether I was attending a market or beginning a side quest.
I half expected someone to walk up and tell me:
“Traveler, the kingdom is in peril. For five silver pieces and a tarot reading, you may learn your destiny.”
And honestly?
I probably would have paid it.
What makes Sideshow Gallery interesting is that it never feels like a gimmick.
The place embraces weirdness unapologetically.
You’ll find oddities, artwork, metaphysical supplies, handmade pieces from local artists, vintage curiosities, and enough skulls to convince your grandmother you’ve joined a secret society.
Yet somehow it remains welcoming rather than intimidating.
Everyone seemed genuinely excited to be there.
Artists were talking with visitors.
People were browsing booths.
Shoppers were discovering things they absolutely did not plan on buying thirty minutes earlier.
The atmosphere felt less like retail and more like a community gathering for people whose Amazon recommendations include words like alchemy, taxidermy, and forbidden knowledge.
As someone who spends most weekends bouncing between street festivals, concerts, coffee shops, cannabis events, political stories, and whatever chaos Chicago decides to invent next, I can honestly say this was one of the more unique experiences we’ve stumbled into.
Because let’s be honest:
Most Saturdays start with coffee.
This one somehow ended with dragon potions, psychic readings, medieval decorations, occult artwork, and me wondering whether I accidentally accepted a quest from an NPC.
Final Verdict
If you’re looking for normal, this probably isn’t your place.
If you’re looking for unique local art, oddities, fantasy aesthetics, metaphysical supplies, interesting people, and the feeling that you’re one conversation away from discovering a hidden wizard guild operating out of Logan Square…
You’ll probably have a great time.
No idea what we were walking into.
Would absolutely walk into it again.
“We came for a casual afternoon walk and left wondering whether Dragon’s Breath counts as a beverage, a potion, or a legally binding magical contract.”
