Reggies Chicago: Don't Judge This Book by Its Cover
This was my first trip back to Reggies in probably ten years, and surprisingly, my first time ever going for the food and before sunset.
Located in the South Loop right next to friend-of-the-show Prohibition Cafe, Reggies gives off a very specific first impression. From the outside, and honestly even from the inside, you might not expect great food or great service.
And you'd be completely wrong.
The atmosphere is one of the coolest parts of the experience. Reggies feels like a biker bar, concert venue, dive bar, and neighborhood hangout all rolled into one. Every inch of the place seems covered in band posters, stickers, and rock-and-roll history. During our visit, people were constantly walking in carrying guitars, drum hardware, and various pieces of equipment while a band prepared for that evening's show.
The crowd was just as diverse. We saw everything from preppy outfits to colorful hair, loud piercings, leather jackets, and everything in between. Somehow it all worked. Nobody looked out of place because everyone fit in.
Then came the service.
Once our server realized we weren't going to be difficult customers, she pulled up a chair and sat down with us to walk through the menu. She helped us decide on sauces, dips, and even how many wings two grown men could realistically put away.
Her answer?
Twenty-four.
Challenge accepted.
Less than ten minutes later, three plates hit the table loaded with wings: BBQ, Buffalo, and the house-recommended Mix, which combines BBQ and Fire sauce. At our server's suggestion, we also grabbed a side of Fire sauce.
That turned out to be both an excellent and dangerous decision.
The first thing that hit us wasn't the flavor, it was the temperature. These wings came out absolutely nuclear hot, the kind where you know they went straight from the fryer to the plate.
The second thing we noticed was the size.
These weren't typical bar wings. I'd estimate they were close to three times the size of the average wing. Massive, meaty, and covered in sauce.
To keep things fair, we developed a system. We'd each grab one wing from a plate and rotate to the next flavor so nobody accidentally got more of the good stuff.
Not that there was a bad flavor.
The Buffalo was solid. The BBQ was excellent.
But the clear winner of the night was the Mix.
The combination of sweet BBQ and the creeping heat of the Fire sauce created something completely unique. It was unlike any wing flavor either of us had tried before.
Speaking of Fire sauce...
At first, it almost tricked us. You know that feeling when you can taste something is going to be hot before the heat actually arrives? That's exactly what happened.
The flavor showed up immediately, but the spice took its time.
Then it slowly started creeping in.
Every bite got hotter.
Every sip of lemonade became less effective.
Every wing that followed somehow tasted spicier than the last.
The real surprise was that once the Fire sauce got involved, every wing tasted hotter. We'd jump back to a BBQ wing looking for relief only to discover the Fire sauce had already moved into the neighborhood and wasn't paying rent.
By the end, the sauce had us both in a full headlock.
I'm pretty sure I drank some blue cheese dressing in a desperate attempt to put out the fire.
And yes, we finished all twenty-four wings.
Every single one.
If I had to find a negative, I'd really have to nitpick. Toward the end of the meal, our server took a little longer than expected to check on drink refills. We were hoping for one more lemonade before wrapping up, but by the time she came back around we were ready for the check anyway.
That's hardly a complaint and certainly not a reason not to return.
In fact, the opposite is true.
We'll absolutely be back.
The funny thing is, after experiencing the wings, we now want to try everything else on the menu too.
What makes Reggies special isn't just the food. It's the feeling that everyone belongs there. Whether you're a regular grabbing a burger after work, a metalhead heading to a show, or someone stopping in for their first visit in a decade, the place feels welcoming.
And unlike most neighborhood spots, there's always the possibility that a stadium-level artist might walk through the door for a surprise set before playing Soldier Field or the United Center.
That's Reggies.
A neighborhood bar with arena-sized stories.
Final Verdict
Excellent wings.
Excellent atmosphere.
Excellent service.
The Mix sauce is a must-order.
We'll definitely be back for wing night, but next time we're exploring the rest of the menu. They have some great specials too like .99 cent wing Tuesdays we added the specials menu at the bottom.
