Anker vs. My Old Reliable: The Battery Bank Review I Didn’t Expect to Write

Anker vs. My Old Reliable: The Battery Bank Review I Didn’t Expect to Write

There are two kinds of portable battery people.

The first group buys a power bank because they occasionally need one.

The second group has watched their phone hit 2% battery in the middle of a convention center, airport, music festival, trade show, road trip, or all-day adventure and develops trust issues.

I am firmly in the second category.

After years of carrying one particular battery bank everywhere, I finally found something that knocked it off the throne.

The Challenger: Anker Magnetic Power Bank

I’ve used plenty of battery packs over the years, but this newer Anker unit immediately stood out for one reason:

It feels like it was designed by someone who actually uses battery packs.

Not someone sitting in a conference room.

Someone whose phone dies at the worst possible moment.

What It Gets Right

The Magnet

This is probably the biggest upgrade.

The magnetic connection is strong enough that you don’t spend your day wondering if the battery is still attached.

If you’ve used weaker magnetic chargers before, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

This one locks on and stays put.

The Kickstand

I didn’t think I’d care about the kickstand.

I was wrong.

Whether you’re watching videos, checking emails, running navigation, or sitting in a hotel room after a long day, the kickstand comes in clutch far more often than expected.

It’s one of those features you ignore until you have it.

Then you never want to lose it.

The Capacity

The biggest advantage over my old favorite battery is simply battery life.

This thing keeps going.

When you’re walking convention floors like NeoCon, attending conferences, covering events, traveling, or running around Chicago all day taking photos and video, capacity matters.

The larger battery means less anxiety and fewer charging stops.

USB-C Charging

The charging performance is excellent, and everything feels modern and streamlined compared to older battery designs.

No weird adapters.

No special cables.

No nonsense.

The Former Champion

The older battery still deserves respect.

It served me well for years.

The biggest feature it has that the Anker lacks?

The Built-In Wall Plug

This was genius.

No charging brick.

No extra cable.

Just plug the battery directly into the wall.

For travel and portability, that’s incredibly convenient.

It’s still one of my favorite battery-bank features ever.

Why the Anker Wins Anyway

The problem is that once you compare the actual day-to-day experience, the Anker starts winning almost every category.

The built-in plug is genuinely missed.

But that’s really the only category where the older unit wins.

Everything else feels like an upgrade.

Final Verdict

If portability alone is your top priority, the older battery with the integrated wall plug still has a place in your bag.

But if you’re looking for the better overall power bank, the Anker isn’t just slightly better it’s significantly better.

The stronger magnet, larger battery capacity, kickstand, charging performance, and overall usability make it the battery pack I reach for first.

The old one earned its retirement.

The Anker earned its spot.

F’nAround Rating

Older Battery: 🔋🔋🔋🔋

Anker Magnetic Power Bank: 🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋

Winner: Anker by a comfortable margin.

The only thing that would make it perfect is stealing that built-in wall plug idea from the old battery. If Anker ever combines the larger battery, stronger magnet, kickstand, and integrated wall charger into one device, they might accidentally create the last power bank I’d ever need to buy.
