Windy City Smokeout Day 1: A Country Music Fan... I'm Not. But I Get It Now.
Review of Windy City Smokeout Day 1: A Country Music Fan... I'm Not. But I Get It Now.
I'll admit it right up front.
Country music isn't my genre.
I know the big names, I can sing along to a handful of songs, but if you asked me to rank today's hottest country artists, I'd probably fail miserably. So walking into Day 1 of the 2026 Windy City Smokeout, I wasn't there because I was a diehard fan of the lineup.
I was there because I wanted to experience what has become one of Chicago's biggest summer festivals.
What I found was a crowd that absolutely loves live music.
The Wednesday lineup featured Sterling Elza, Braxton Keith, and headliner Treaty Oak Revival.
While I didn't have years of listening history with any of them, it didn't take long to understand why thousands of people showed up.
Sterling Elza kicked things off with the kind of confidence you hope to see from an opening act. He didn't feel like someone simply waiting for the headliner, he played like he wanted to earn new fans, and judging by the reactions around us, he probably did.
Braxton Keith kept the momentum rolling. His set had an easygoing confidence to it that fit the festival perfectly. Everywhere you looked people were singing along, dancing, or simply enjoying a cold drink while soaking up the atmosphere. Even as someone unfamiliar with much of his catalog, it was hard not to appreciate how engaged the crowd was.
Then came Treaty Oak Revival.
If there was one thing that became obvious, it's why they've been generating so much buzz in country music circles. Their set carried a bigger energy than I expected, blending country roots with enough Southern rock influence that even someone outside the genre could appreciate it. The crowd knew every word, every chorus, and every cue. That kind of connection between a band and its fans is hard to fake.
What impressed me most wasn't necessarily any one song, it was how authentic everything felt. Nobody on stage looked like they were simply checking off another stop on a tour. They looked like they genuinely wanted to be there, and the audience fed right back into that energy.
As someone coming in with almost no expectations, that's probably the biggest compliment I can give.
Did I suddenly become a country music expert?
Not even close.
But I left with a better understanding of why this festival continues to grow every year. Great live music doesn't always require knowing every lyric. Sometimes it's enough to watch talented performers connect with a crowd that's there for exactly the right reasons.
Day 1 didn't convert me into a country music superfan.
It did remind me why live music is one of the best experiences you can have, regardless of the genre.
And if the rest of the weekend keeps this level of energy, Windy City Smokeout is going to be one hell of a ride.
What our Opening day at Windy City Smokeout is officially over video!
The crowd showed up early, bringing plenty of energy for Treaty Oak Revival despite the summer heat. The barbecue was flying off the smokers, the music was loud, and somehow Dude Wipes managed to make one of the biggest impressions of the day.
More food, music, and festival coverage is on the way from F’nAround.
