VibeApple Inflatable Safari 2026 at Recess Chicago

VibeApple Inflatable Safari 2026 at Recess Chicago

There are Chicago events you attend because you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Then there are events where you walk onto a West Loop patio containing hundreds of inflatable safari animals, Afro house is playing, everybody is dressed for the theme, brands are handing you things, and eventually someone is covering Joe’s face and head in purple and green glitter because apparently she wanted him to feel bonita.

The VibeApple Inflatable Safari 2026 was firmly in the second category.

And we loved it.

On Saturday, August 22, VibeApple brought its Inflatable Safari back to Recess, 838 W. Kinzie St. in Chicago, transforming the massive patio into something between an outdoor music festival, adult playground, brand activation, safari-themed fever dream and extremely effective Instagram backdrop.

The event ran from 1 p.m. into the night, with listings advertising more than 500 inflatable African animals, including oversized elephants and giraffes and monkeys suspended around the venue. Guests were encouraged to join the safari/animal-print theme while Afro house provided the soundtrack.

That description sounds ridiculous.

The actual event was considerably more ridiculous.

In a good way.

What Is VibeApple’s Inflatable Safari?

VibeApple describes itself as a Chicago experiential-events company specializing in pop-up events at distinctive venues around the city. Inflatable Safari isn’t some random one-off idea, either.

VibeApple’s event archive shows the concept at Recess going back years. The company has even exported the concept.

VibeApple says Inflatable Safari has attracted roughly 1,200 attendees, putting it among a portfolio that also includes Lucky Disco, Nights in Mykonos, white party, Bohemia Beach, Vida Colorida and Nightmare on the Express.

The concept isn’t particularly complicated:

Take one of Chicago’s enormous outdoor patios.

Fill it with an absurd number of inflatable animals.

Add DJs.

Add brands.

Add drinks.

Add several hundred people.

Encourage everyone to dress accordingly.

See what happens.

That’s basically the formula.

And sometimes not overcomplicating something is exactly why it works.

Recess Is Almost Built for Something Like This

Location matters enormously for an experiential event, and Recess was a particularly good choice.

At 838 W. Kinzie St., the West Loop/Fulton Market venue has the outdoor space necessary to make hundreds of inflatables feel like an environment rather than somebody dumping the contents of a Party City warehouse onto a dance floor.

VibeApple has used Recess repeatedly for Inflatable Safari, and after attending, we understand why.

The animals weren’t merely decorations around the edges.

They became part of the party.

People carried them around. They posed with them. They danced around them. They became props for photos and videos. Every direction gave you something different to film, which is exactly what an experiential event should accomplish.

You shouldn’t need a giant sign explaining the experience.

You should walk through the door and immediately understand that you’ve entered something different.

We did.

The Music: Afro House in an Inflatable Jungle

The 2026 lineup included Headphase, Amari, Ko Kasi, Pony & Blondie and Sam White, with the event promoted as one of Chicago’s biggest and wildest patio parties of the summer.

Afro house was an especially good fit.

This wasn’t supposed to feel like standing inside a nightclub at 1 a.m. The outdoor environment, daylight, ridiculous decorations and constant movement needed music that could maintain the party without swallowing everything else happening around it.

The DJs became part of the environment rather than the only reason for the environment.

That’s an important distinction.

There was always something happening, but we could still wander around, talk to people, visit the activations, film content and in Joe’s case make increasingly questionable aesthetic decisions.

Then We Found the Vendors

This is where Inflatable Safari worked better than a lot of branded events we’ve attended.

When sponsor and vendor activations are poorly integrated, they feel like booths someone dropped into an event because somebody wrote a check.

Here, wandering between them became part of what we were doing.

One of our favorites was AWAKE caffeinated chocolate.

Mike and Joe eventually worked their way through the different flavors, with each serving packing caffeine into something that tastes considerably more like candy than your morning coffee.

Mike loved it.

Joe took a double dose.

This probably requires context.

Joe starts most mornings with something approaching a pot of coffee and five shots of espresso, so when somebody tells him a chocolate contains roughly half a cup of coffee worth of caffeine, his response apparently isn’t caution.

It’s:

“Can I have another one?”

We said after trying it that AWAKE had basically found its target demographic.

Mike got chocolate.

Joe got caffeine.

Everybody won.

And Then Joe Got the Full Glitter Treatment

At some point we encountered Meredith Grace.

This eventually resulted in Joe receiving what can only reasonably be described as the full glitter down.

Face.

Head.

Everything.

Purple and green glitter.

The stated objective was apparently to make Joe feel bonita.

Mission accomplished.

By the time she was finished, Joe glistened like a vampire from Twilight who had wandered into the wrong cinematic universe and somehow ended up at Recess.

This is also why we like events that actually give people things to do.

We can go to a bar any day.

We can listen to a DJ any weekend.

The memorable part is the weird interaction that wouldn’t have happened if you had stayed home.

A week later, you’re probably not telling somebody exactly what drink you ordered.

You’re explaining why your friend suddenly looked like Edward Cullen at an inflatable safari.

That’s experiential marketing working exactly as intended.

Then One of Joe’s Previous Lives Walked Into the Safari

There was another moment we didn’t expect.

Joe ran into Chicago broadcaster Lou Canellis.

They knew each other from an entirely different period of Joe’s life, back when Joe was involved in restaurants through the investment, venture-capital and lending side of the industry.

Now they were catching up again.

Except this time Joe was operating F’nAround.

At an inflatable safari.

Covered in glitter.

There is probably some profound lesson about the strange circular nature of life buried somewhere in there.

We’re not qualified to identify it.

But it was genuinely fun.

You build one career.

Then another.

Then another.

Years later those circles randomly overlap while you’re standing next to an inflatable giraffe.

Chicago is weird like that.

The Thing VibeApple Gets Right: The Event Is the Content

This may have been our biggest takeaway.

VibeApple calls itself an experiential company rather than simply an event promoter, and Inflatable Safari makes the distinction easier to understand. The company says its events are designed around production details and environments people want to share through social media.

That’s exactly what happened to us.

We weren’t struggling to figure out what to film.

The event continuously produced material.

The inflatables were content.

The crowd was content.

The DJs were content.

The vendors were content.

The glitter was definitely content.

Our interactions became content.

Eventually we had enough disconnected insanity that the logical way to explain the afternoon wasn’t another talking-head video.

It was a montage.

That’s probably one of the best compliments we can give an event in 2026.

It gave us something worth documenting without requiring us to manufacture a reason why it was interesting.

Our VibeApple Inflatable Safari Review

F’nAround goes to enough festivals, pop-ups, restaurants, conventions and branded experiences that we’ve learned something fairly quickly:

Bigger doesn’t automatically mean better.

More sponsors don’t automatically mean better.

More expensive production doesn’t automatically mean better.

What matters is whether the pieces combine into an experience people actually remember.

Inflatable Safari did.

It’s inherently unserious, and VibeApple seems to understand that.

Nobody needs a 40-page artistic manifesto explaining why there are 500 inflatable animals at Recess.

There are hundreds of inflatable animals because having hundreds of inflatable animals on a giant Chicago patio while DJs play music is fucking fun.

Sometimes that’s enough.

More importantly, the production surrounding the joke was good enough to sustain it. The music matched the environment. Recess gave the concept room to breathe. The brand activations gave us things to discover instead of merely advertisements to walk past. The crowd embraced the theme. And the entire environment encouraged participation.

By the end, we’d eaten caffeinated chocolate, filmed with giant animals, bounced around the patio, caught up with people from years ago, met new people, listened to DJs and somehow transformed Joe into a glitter-covered vampire.

We went there looking for something interesting.

VibeApple gave us plenty to F’nAround with.

F’nVerdict

Would we go back? Absolutely.

Inflatable Safari is exactly the kind of Chicago summer event we like covering: visually ridiculous, social without taking itself too seriously, filled with things to interact with and fundamentally built around people having a good time.

For anyone searching for things to do in Chicago, West Loop events, Chicago summer parties, Recess Chicago events, Afro house events or unique Chicago experiences, VibeApple’s Inflatable Safari is one worth keeping on the radar.

VibeApple has now brought the concept back multiple times, so we’re hoping the inflatable herd survives another year.

And next time?

Maybe don’t give Joe two caffeinated chocolates before handing someone a container of glitter.

Actually, never mind.

Definitely do that.
