Red Bull Spin-Off Chicago Review: Deep Dish Pizza, Blues Brothers, and Beautiful Chaos on Lake Michigan

Red Bull Spin-Off Chicago Review: Deep Dish Pizza, Blues Brothers, and Beautiful Chaos on Lake Michigan

Every city has events that make absolutely no sense on paper.

Then you show up and realize they’re genius.

That perfectly describes Red Bull Spin-Off Chicago.

Imagine dozens of teams building ridiculous homemade tandem bikes, dressing like movie characters, loading up on free Red Bull, surrounding themselves with food trucks, and then launching themselves down a ramp toward Lake Michigan while thousands of people cheer.

That’s Spin-Off.

And somehow it works.

A Perfect Chicago Setting

Held along Chicago’s lakefront, the event immediately felt like one giant summer party.

The crowd was massive.

Food trucks lined the area serving everything from Happy lobster rolls to Prime tacos, grilled cheese creations from Cheesie’s, rainbow ice cream, and festival favorites. Between the food, music, waterfront views, and unlimited people-watching opportunities, you could spend the entire day without ever watching a bike hit the water.

But you’d miss the best part.

The Teams Were Half the Show

Walking through the competitors before the event felt like wandering through a movie set.

One team rolled in dressed as the Blues Brothers, complete with the iconic Chicago police car theme.

Another recreated Dumb and Dumber, complete with the unforgettable tuxedos and hairstyles.

Others built outrageous tandem bikes, custom vehicles, and rolling works of art that somehow managed to qualify as bicycles.

The creativity alone made the event worth attending.

The Deep Dish Disaster We Didn’t Know We Needed

The funniest entry of the day may have been the giant Lou Malnati’s deep-dish pizza bicycle created by students from Columbia College Chicago.

On paper, it was perfect.

A giant slice of Chicago pizza riding through a Chicago event.

What could go wrong?

Everything.

That pizza hit the course and went down faster and harder than any deep dish we’ve ever eaten at Lou’s.

The crowd absolutely loved it.

Sometimes victory isn’t the goal.

Sometimes becoming the funniest crash of the day is enough.

Relish Delivered the Merch

Another cool surprise was seeing Chicago-based streetwear brand Relish involved with the event.

Their official Red Bull Spin-Off merchandise featured a design that perfectly captured the city’s personality: a tandem bicycle carrying iconic Chicago imagery including deep-dish pizza and Cloud Gate, better known as “The Bean.”

It was one of those shirts that immediately tells people exactly where it came from.

Red Bull Knows How to Put on an Event

One thing became obvious very quickly.

Red Bull doesn’t simply host events.

They create experiences.

Whether it’s Spin-Off, Flugtag, cliff diving, BMX competitions, Formula One, air races, snowboarding, skateboarding, motocross, or any of their other properties, Red Bull has spent years perfecting the art of making spectators feel like they’re part of the action.

The organization was impressive.

The crowd management worked.

The atmosphere was energetic.

And there was enough free Red Bull floating around to keep everyone fully caffeinated for the day.

F’nAround Gets a Front Row Seat

One of the highlights for us was being welcomed into the media area.

We had the opportunity to interview racers, speak with participants, and experience the event from behind the scenes rather than simply watching from the crowd.

That access made it easy to appreciate just how much work, creativity, and pure insanity goes into building these bikes.

The racers weren’t just competing.

They were performing.

And the crowd rewarded every success, failure, crash, and spectacular splash.

Final Verdict

Red Bull Spin-Off Chicago might be one of the most entertaining free events you’ll find in the city.

It combines creativity, engineering, costumes, comedy, competition, food, music, and just enough chaos to keep everyone smiling.

You don’t have to understand the rules.

You don’t even need to know who’s winning.

Just show up and enjoy the madness.

If you ever get the chance to attend a Red Bull event, whether it’s Spin-Off, Flugtag, one of their racing series, or one of their extreme sports showcases… take it.

Red Bull knows how to put on a show.

And Spin-Off Chicago was proof.

Best Costume: Wet Bandits from Home Alone

Best Concept: Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Pizza Bike

Biggest Lesson: Just because it’s a giant pizza doesn’t mean it can corner.
