Dark Matter Coffee Review: When You Let the Barista Choose…
Some coffee shops ask, “What can I get you?”
Dark Matter Coffee basically asks, “How adventurous are you feeling today?”
Walking into Soft Parade on Grand Avenue, you immediately realize this isn’t your average coffee chain. The music, the art, the industrial atmosphere, and the overall vibe make it feel less like a café and more like the coffee equivalent of a neighborhood record store where everyone somehow knows a guy in a band.
Mike looked around and summed it up perfectly:
“I feel like I should have a cigarette in one hand.”
No, he didn’t light one. It was just the vibe.
When we asked what we should order, we gave them an easy out.
“We usually order our regular coffees.”
Instead, they smiled and said…
“Nope. Try something different.”
Challenge accepted.
Since they picked the drinks, we judged the coffee based on their recommendations, not by comparing them to our usual favorites.
Wake & Bake
This signature latte combines maple syrup, sage, and black pepper.
On paper?
That’s one of those combinations that either changes your life or makes you question everyone involved in creating it.
For us, the result was surprisingly mellow.
It reminded us almost of sweet milk with subtle flavors instead of a bold coffee punch.
Interesting?
Absolutely.
Our favorite?
Not quite.
But we completely understand why someone looking for a softer, sweeter coffee would absolutely love it.
Mayan Mocha
Chocolate, agave, cayenne, and cinnamon.
We expected something spicy and intense.
Instead…
Our brains immediately said:
“Horchata.”
Not because it literally tastes like horchata, but because the cinnamon and sweetness combined into something that reminded us far more of that than a traditional mocha.
Again…
Not what we’d normally order.
But definitely not bad.
Just different.
And honestly, that’s kind of Dark Matter’s entire philosophy.
The Experience
One thing we appreciated is that the staff didn’t simply sell us what everyone orders.
They encouraged us to step outside our comfort zone.
Sometimes reviews end with “This is amazing.”
Sometimes they end with “Not for us.”
And that’s okay.
Food and coffee are subjective.
Our job isn’t to pretend we love everything.
It’s to tell you exactly what happened.
If you’re someone who enjoys creative coffee drinks that blur the line between dessert, spice, and espresso, these may be exactly what you’re looking for.
If you’re a traditional black coffee or classic latte drinker like us…
You may end up ordering something different next time.

Dark Matter Coffee
F’nAround Final Verdict
Atmosphere: One of the coolest coffee shop vibes in Chicago.
Service: Friendly staff who weren’t afraid to recommend something outside our comfort zone.
Coffee: Not our personal favorites this time but that’s exactly why trying new things is worth it. The Wake & Bake and Mayan Mocha simply weren’t our flavor profile, even though we can absolutely see why other people rave about them.
Sometimes the best review isn’t “this was incredible.”
Sometimes it’s:
“We tried something we’d never order ourselves… and now you know whether it might be for you.”
And honestly?
That’s what F’nAround is all about.
