Workshop Apothecary: Somewhere Between a Witch Shop, Coffee Spot, and Pilsen Fever Dream

Workshop Apothecary: Somewhere Between a Witch Shop, Coffee Spot, and Pilsen Fever Dream

So I was over at XOCO for the Chicago Streetwear Expo near Western and 18th, ready to caffeinate myself into functionality… only to discover the bar situation inside wasn’t happening yet.

Which honestly might’ve been the best thing that happened because I ended up wandering around the corner and accidentally finding one of the more interesting little spots in Pilsen:

Workshop Apothecary

And this place feels like someone combined: a coffee shop, a goth art studio, an herbal witchcraft starter pack, an indie perfume lab, and that one friend who definitely owns crystals but somehow also makes amazing espresso.

The second you walk in, it’s sensory overload in the best possible way.

They’ve got handmade soaps, oils, journals, spiritual goods, incense, custom scent blending setups, weird little curiosities, and enough aesthetic energy to fuel at least six Pilsen Instagram shoots simultaneously.

Then I noticed something I absolutely did not expect: Herbal cigarettes. Not tobacco. Not vape stuff. Literal hand-rolled herbal smokes made with things like lavender, rose, peppermint, eucalyptus, honey blends, and catmint.

I’m standing there like:

“Wait… Maxwell Street lost the bootleg vendors but Pilsen gained artisanal witch cigarettes?”

Chicago evolves in mysterious ways.

Then there’s signs everywhere saying things like:

“Face, Booty & Hair Soap.”

And honestly?

Respect the branding consistency.

They also had little evil-eye protection charms, tarot-inspired art, journals that looked like they contain forbidden forest spells, and enough moody black wallpaper to make Tim Burton want an espresso.

But here’s the part that actually shocked me:

The coffee was legitimately really good.

I grabbed a four-shot iced oat milk espresso latte for SIX bucks.

In Chicago.

In 2026.

That’s basically economic folklore at this point.

And it wasn’t one of those tiny “artisan” coffees where you spend $11 to taste anxiety and cinnamon dust. It was strong, smooth, actually refreshing, and exactly what I needed walking around 18th Street.

The staff were also incredibly friendly and welcoming, which matters because some boutique places can feel like you accidentally walked into a private coven meeting.

This didn’t.

It felt relaxed, creative, weird in a good way, and genuinely neighborhood-oriented.

So if you’re heading to: XOCO events, Pilsen pop-ups, vintage shopping, murals around 18th Street, coffee crawling in Chicago, or just looking for something different from the usual “minimalist white wall latte” experience…

This place is worth stopping into.

Because where else can you: buy lavender smokes, design your own scent, get spiritually protected from the evil eye, and leave caffeinated for under ten bucks?

Only in Chicago.
