Illinois Senate Bill 315
Illinois just passed what many are calling a landmark AI accountability bill.
On the surface, that sounds like a good thing. Transparency. Oversight. Safety. Accountability.
But every time I hear the word “safety” attached to a new compliance regime, I find myself asking the same question:
Who gets paid to keep everyone safe?
It’s a question that isn’t unique to artificial intelligence.
We’ve heard it before in banking.
We’ve heard it before in healthcare.
We’ve heard it before in cannabis.
The technology changes.
The buzzwords change.
The consultants change.
The software changes.
The regulations change.
But the incentives often look surprisingly familiar.
In my latest F’nAround analysis, I take a look at Illinois’ new AI bill, the growing compliance economy surrounding artificial intelligence, and why every discussion about safety should also include a discussion about power, access, incentives, and accountability.
Because history has a funny way of repeating itself.
Just with better marketing.
